Environmental Health Department

Overview

The Department of Environmental Health at Bethsaida College of Health Technology, Ogbomoso, stands at the forefront of preventive public health education in Nigeria.
Since its establishment, the department has been dedicated to training Environmental Health Officers and Technicians who protect and promote the health of individuals and communities by ensuring clean environments, safe water, and sustainable ecosystems.

Our Objectives

The Department of Environmental Health aims to:

  • Produce skilled and certified Environmental Health Officers and Technicians who can function effectively in public health, environmental control, and sanitation programs.

  • Develop students’ competence in identifying, monitoring, and mitigating environmental health hazards.

  • Instill in students a deep understanding of epidemiology, waste management, water sanitation, and pollution control.

  • Prepare graduates to provide leadership in community sanitation, vector control, and environmental management initiatives.

  • Promote research and innovation in environmental health science to support national health development.
Programs Offered

The department runs government-approved programs accredited by the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) and other relevant professional bodies.

1. Environmental Health Technician (EHT)
  • Duration: 3 years

  • Entry Requirements: 5 credits in WAEC/NECO/NABTEB including English, Mathematics, Biology/Health Science, Chemistry, and Physics (in not more than two sittings).

  • Program Description:
    This program prepares students to become mid-level professionals responsible for the prevention and control of environmental health hazards.
    EHTs are trained to carry out inspections, enforce sanitation laws, monitor waste disposal, ensure food hygiene, and maintain safe water supply.
2. Environmental Health Assistant (EHA)
  • Duration: 2 years

  • Entry Requirements: Minimum of 3–4 credits in relevant science subjects.

  • Program Description:
    This program focuses on training field-level personnel who assist in disease prevention, sanitation, and health education.
    EHAs play a critical role in ensuring hygiene and safety in markets, schools, and residential areas, working under the supervision of qualified Environmental Health Officers.
